The Wii U launches in just a few weeks, but one of the more notable items missing in the launch lineup is a major first party title.
Among the more anticipated first party titles currently said to be in development is the next Zelda title. According to Official Nintendo Magazine, Retro Studios could be a potential developer for the film. The company which has a strong track record of the Metroid Prime trilogy and Donkey Kong Country Returns could prove to be a rejuvenating force for the long standing franchise.
Iconic video game maker Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about this possibility after winning the Príncipe de Asturias award in Communication and Humanities in Spain last week .
"The possibility of Retro Studios making a new Zelda with a good proposal isn't a far-fetched idea at all and could be possible," he said.
He did state however that communication would be difficult since Nintendo would want to have a great deal of creative input on the title and since Retro is established in the United States and the big N works form Japan, it could be difficult to maintain a consistent flow between the two companies.
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime recently noted that Retro was hard at work on a major Wii U title. It could be the next Zelda.
Rumors have cropped up in the last few months regarding the upcoming Zelda title. Wii U Daily reported back in September that the Wii U Zelda had the biggest development team ever assembled by Nintendo for one game, giving rise to speculation that this may be the biggest Zelda game ever. Eiji Aonuma, director of past Zelda titles, was also said to return as director of the project. The report also stated that work on the game started back into 2010.
The structure of the game will supposedly feature the same number of dungeons as in previous games (which should number around 10 or 11), but they will be much larger than anything ever before. Wii U Daily's source even states that the dungeons are broken into "3 parts and will literally take hours to complete." The game will also have online features though no multiplayer will be included. It will also take full advantage of Nintendo's tablet controller and will "redefine gaming with its features and innovation."
According to those rumors, the title will be released in 2014. The Wii U launches on November 18, 2012 alongside over 20 titles.
