As Hurricane Sandy disrupts the city that never sleeps, it has also disrupted plans for the presidential candidates.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama cancelled campaigning plans in Virginia as Hurricane Sandy pummels the northeastern states.

Virginia is proving to be a vital battleground state as polling averages shows a statistical tie between Romney and President Obama.

According to Real Clear Politics (RCP), Obama and Romney are tied at 47.8 percent based on polling figures from Oct. 22 and Oct. 26.

Polls such as Rasmussen Reports surveyed 750 likely voters to show Romney leading with two percent - 50 percent to Obama's 48 percent. The margin of error stands at four percent.

However, the Washington Post, with 1,128 likely voters surveyed, show the president with a four percent lead - Obama 51 percent to Romney's 47 percent.

The polling figures show why the state is important for both candidates, especially for President Obama who won the state in 2008 with a 6.3 percent margin.

Hurricane Sandy's intrusion led Romney to campaign instead in fellow swing state Ohio where running mate Paul Ryan was hosting a rally.

Ohio polling averages show Obama leading most polls but most within the margin of error - 48.6 percent for Obama to Romney's 46.5 percent.

Hurricane Sandy's category one strength has also led Obama to cancel events in another swing state of New Hampshire, which is expecting strong winds and rain between Sunday and Monday.

According to Reuters, Vice President Joe Biden stated, "The last thing the president and I want to do is get in the way of anything. The most important thing is people's safety and people's health."

New Hampshire also shows Obama leading in most polls but by a two-percent margin, 48.8 percent for Obama to Romney's 46.8 percent.

According to RCP, Virginia is likely give its 13 Electoral College votes to Romney while Ohio and New Hampshire will give their votes to Obama, 18 and 4 votes respectively.
