T-Mobile appears to be poised to roll out the Android L 5.1.1 Lollipop on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
The update is going to be released over-the-air (OTA), although the announcement has only been made on the T-Mobile network, according to Sam Mobile.
Forbes notes that one Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge owner, Eduardo Mera, was able to receive the latest update OTA. He shared a short video of his device operating on the new firmware. Watch the video below uploaded on YouTube.
Mera, an XDA-Developers user dubbed Sunderwear, said, "Look at the kernel build date. This thing was cooked up YESTERDAY. Device feels a lot snappier!! This is the T-Mobile branded one."
Although not a lot of details had been divulged, there were a number of notable features that other users noticed. First is that the Galaxy S6 Edge completely skipped Android 5.1 and moved from Android 5.0.2 to Android 5.1.1. Second, the update locks the bootloader on the device, based on the same report by Sam Mobile. Third, it is the most important version of Android Lollipop at the moment, as Forbes describes.
The publication says Android 5.1.1 claims to repair the memory leak that the Android Lollipop suffered from since its launch in November 2014. The problem does not free up memory when apps are closed and opened, causing devices to perform at a slowing rate until users need to restart. Android 5.1 made a minor improvement on the memory leak, which Android 5.1.1 is said to have finally fixed.
Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge users will also find Guest Mode enabled when they update their devices to Android 5.1.1, assures Phandroid. Guest Mode was reportedly introduced by Google with Android 5.0 and allows various users to access the owner's smartphone or tablet, without accessing personal data. There is also a Kids Mode, allowing children to use the device safely. The Guest Mode allows each user to have his own personal space, enabling them to install their own apps, secure their setup using their own fingerprint and personalize their homescreen, among others.
Sam Mobile adds that out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will not have Guest Mode available, so users will acquire it when they update to Android L 5.1.1 Lollipop. Guest Mode is said to work just like it does on stock Android. Other Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users are expected to have the new update in the following weeks.
