The Sony Xperia Z4 was officially introduced in Japan on April 20. The new model generally gave the first impression that it is a continuation of the design philosophy that was incorporated in Xperia Z phones in the past.

Android Pit reported that there is no official release date for the Sony Xperia Z4 in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe. Still, many speculate that the smartphone will be displayed at IFA 2015 in September. The Xperia Z4 features a metal and glass chassis and it maintained the "OmniBalance" design that many Sony phones have, with a glass front and rear, a metal rim around the sides and a sleek and angular look.

Based on a report by Android Central, there were also a number of enhancements made on the Z4, compared to its predecessor, the Sony Xperia Z3. Although the length and width was kept at 146mm and 72mm respectively, the Z4 is thinner and lighter at 6.9mm and 144 grams, compared to the Z3 which was 7.3mm and 152 grams. The battery of the Z4 has lowered slightly at 2930mAh compared to the 3100mAh battery of its predecessor. Both phones still feature the 5.2-inch Triluminos Display for Mobile at 1920x1080. The memory of the Z4 improved from 16GB to 32GB. Android Pit in another report cited that the Xperia Z4 is also faster, using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 2.0GHz / 1.5GHz Octa-core 64-bit processor. The Z3 used the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz 32-bit processor.

The main camera remained unchanged, with the 20.7-megapixel backside-illuminated Exmor RS for mobile in place. The front camera of the Z4 was improved to the 5.1-megapixel Exmor R for mobile from the Z3's 2.2-megapixel version. As for the software, the Z4 runs on the new Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, while the Z3 used the Android 4.4 KitKat, which was upgradable to 5.0 Lollipop, based on the same report by Android Central.

The Sony Xperia Z4 has come a long way from the Z2, which was released in April 2014. The Z2 was 8.2mm thick and weighed 163 grams. The Xperia Z2 actually had a lot of similar traits to the Z3, such as the 5.2-inch Triluminos Display, 16 GB internal memory, 20.7-megapixel main camera and 2.2-megapixel front camera. It also ran on the Android 4.4.2 KitKat, upgradable to the 5.0.2 Lollipop. It had a 3200mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery and the same connective capabilities, according to GSM Arena.

Overall, the Z4 edges out its predecessors with more powerful specs. The Z3 is only slightly better than the Z2 with its minor upgrades.
