The 32GB base model of the Microsoft Surface tablet, which ships without the black touch keyboard cover, is now backordered for up to 3 weeks after its release.
At $499, Microsoft's entry-level device sports a 16:9 display at a 1366 x 768 resolution, buffered by Gorilla Glass 2.0. The device's touchscreen is directly bonded to the LCD, allowing for reduced reflection, improved clarity, and more efficient battery usage. The Surface also features both a front and a rear-facing camera.
The 32GB, priced at $599, and the 64GB, at $699, are both still on track for launch day, with expected delivery dates by October 26. These two premium models are each bundled with a black touch keyboard cover.
On the device's product page, Microsoft notes that the "Touch Cover and Type Cover are revolutionary ways to click in and do more with Surface. With full keyboards, touchpads, and Windows and media shortcuts, you can type, chat, blog, and get stuff done, faster! Both covers click into surface easily, and protect your display when folded closed." The keyboards use magnets to clasp to the tablet's screen, and are touted as spill-resistant.
If consumers wish to simulate a laptop experience, a kickstand if available to prop up the Surface.
The tablet will run on a modified version of Windows 8 called Windows RT, which is tailored to maximize power efficiency. A full version of Windows 8 will ship with the Surface Pro, a model which will ship post-launch.
