Watching cable television without is about to become a lot easier for anyone without a cable subscription.
PlayStation Vue launched in Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York Thursday morning, introducing the newest -and most abundant - Internet streaming service on the market. Whereas platforms like Dish Network's Sling TV service offers 17 channels, Vue delivers on over 80 including favorites CBS, Fox, NBC, Bravo, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon.
For $50 a month, subscribers have access to live programming, on-demand shows, and DVR capabilities; a recording option is unavailable with other providers. Upgrades from $10-20 a month include local sports networks and like New York's YES network and the Big Ten Network. Disney-owned ESPN and ABC are notably missing from the lineup.
Simultaneous streaming will be available at no additional cost. However, streaming can only come from one PS3 or PS4 console at a time.
Sony Entertainment's key demographic with the PlayStation gaming console is 18-34-year-olds. By expanding the Vue to markets outside of major cities, not only does Sony connect with an estimated 56 percent of American families with a gaming console, they give cable giants Time Warner and Comcast a run for their money.
They also reach an ever-growing Latino market.
About 78 percent of Spanish-language-dominant and 50 percent of multi-language homes watch shows in Spanish, according to the Nielsen Company. Hispanics in the United States carry over $1 trillion in purchasing power and represent a majority of the country's growth over the last five years. A recent Nielsen study revealed Latinos are more likely to stream video online that the rest of the U.S. population.
So far, PlayStation Vue's only Spanish-oriented channels are Telemundo and Exitos TV. That may be a problem for Univision's loyal fan base, 76 percent of which admitted to watching no other television network.
Univision struck a deal with Sling TV last month, taking with them popular channels Univision Deportes, Galavisión, and UniMás.
Given that major networks like ABC and Univision aren't available on Vue, it not quite time to start cutting the cable cord. Sony plans a wide nationwide release in the coming weeks and months. It will also be made available on the iPad; though an official release date has yet to be determined.
