Winter Snow Storm February 2015 Maps, Update: Octavia Hits South This Week

The South will be hit by a new winter snow storm early this week, which will be called Octavia, AccuWeather reported.

So far, the southern region has escaped being clouded by snow storms. However, the new winter storm called, Octavia, will be spreading all over Oklahoma City, Dallas, Memphis, Nashville, Little Rock, Wichita and St. Louis.

Over the next 48 hours, Octavia will travel through the cities hovering over Plains and Ozarks then to the Ohio Valley. It might affect other areas already accumulating ice, like Topeka and Kansas City.

Other areas that will be affected are "Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Tupelo, Mississippi; Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama; Atlanta; Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina, and Charlotte, Raleigh and Fayetteville, North Carolina," says AccuWeather.

Octavia has already ran over the Rockies and it has spread its wintry precipitation over the Plains last Sunday.

The winter storm is expected to "extend its snowy and icy tentacles across the Appalachians and into parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast - possibly including New England yet again," according to Weather.

With the intensity, civilians are advised to postpone travel plans as the rain is expected to affect roads. Warnings and advisories were already posted in local areas covering 33 million people.

It has been reported that thunderstorms can also be expected on the part of the Gulf Coast.

According to The Weather Channel, Octavia's hardest hit will be over the southern part of Missouri or the south of the Ohio River. It will also land heavily on the Mid-Atlantic.

Forecasts show that regions including Roanoke, Baltimore, Louisville and the northern part of Nashville could experience about 5 inches or more of snowfall. Other areas like Kentucky and the Appalachians could experience about a foot of snowfall.

Locations like New York City and the southeast of New England would also be hit lightly by Octavia on Tuesday. It is reported that this will be relatively lighter compared to the previous winter storm, Neptune.

AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions Storm Warning Meteorologist Sarah Glenn reports, "Fort Smithe [Arkansas], Little Rock and Memphis will see the highest icing."

"I'm especially concerned for power outages and tree damage [in the above zone]. Due to the recent warmth which led to a high of 66 F in Memphis on Saturday, roads will be initially wet," said Glenn.

Motorists were also advised to watch out for untreated roads that have a high risk of turning slippery and slick. Bridges and overpasses would also be iced up.
