Square Enix has released more information about its upcoming action adventure video game "Rise of the Tomb Raider," which features a "traumatized" and "distraught" Lara Croft undertaking an adventure to the snowy Siberia, Game Spot reported.
"Rise of the Tomb Raider" is the sequel to the 2013 game "Tom Raider" and was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix and Microsoft Studios. It tells the story of Lara's adventure to Siberia accompanied by Jonah Maiava as they look for an ancient city called Kitezhm, which was built by the Grand Prince of Vladimir back in the 13th century.
Lara is still reeling from the events of her previous expedition across the Yamatai. It has been a year, but she has become obsessed with myths and stories of immortality and decided to venture across the Siberia seeking answers.
During an interview with Game Informer for their March cover story, creative director Noah Hughes shared some details about the game.
He shared that aside from the change in scenery from the forest, the snowy mountains, and to new locations such as the sandscapes and underwater caverns, Lara has to fight against Mother Nature herself to try and survive, facing wolves, avalanches and storms. She also has to fight an internal battle with her trauma and mental health.
"People think she's crazier than she is," Hughes said, talking about Lara's new obsession with immortality. "So Lara feels like an outsider in the real world."
He added, "Her next expedition is a way of dealing with the trauma she's been through, but it's also a way of finding a peace by chasing any shred of evidence that what she saw was real."
Crystal Dynamics has also shared that a lot of the features of the game will focus on tomb raiding this time, according to IGN. Lara will be able to climb trees, hide up in the foliage, swim underwater to retrieve objects, giving her more options when fighting others or even avoiding them.
There are also moments when the physical and environmental elements will affect Lara and challenge her. Hughes said, "It's important for us to capture those moments where Lara is uncertain about her identity, her direction, or her ability to come out alive."
There are also larger puzzles to solve and new survival gear to work with. Lara will also face off against new foes, such as a secret society and more mysterious enemies, according to Game Rant.
"Rise of the Tomb Raider" is set to be released sometime later this year as a timed exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The first official trailer was released last year during the E3 2014.
