While many are excited to see what changes and wonders Microsoft would do in its Surface Pro 4, some are suggesting that it would be nothing but just an enhanced Surface Pro 3.
According to The Motley Fool's Ashraf Eassa, he sees the next Surface Pro to be "very short lived" since very little changes and improvements are expected from it. To be exact, Eassa speculates that the only new to the fourth Surface Pro is its chips, nothing more. It's a device which is very identical to its predecessor, Surface Pro 3, with just new chips.
The report noted that the Surface Pro 2 was launched back in October 2013 with the Haswell processor on it. Although it was somewhat expected that the Surface Pro 3 would come with the new Broadwell chips, the device come out in the market with the same Intel Haswell processor, less than a year after its predecessor. With this, it is believed that Microsoft would launch the new 14-nanometer Broadwell chips on its new Surface Pro 4.
Since it is expected that the new chips have already been made, it is also expected that the new Surface Pro 4 will soon be released. Eassa bets it would come out in a month or so. With the new Windows 10 operating system and new Skylake processors on the way, it is therefore presumed that the new device would only take the center stage for just a while. Eassa says the new Broadwell chips will obviously improve the device's performance but he is looking forward more to the Surface Pro 5 with the Windows 10 and Skylake processor which he expects to be out in July.
Several rumors and reports however said different things about the device's specs. For instance, Christian Today reported that it is likely that the new device would be available on two sizes a 13-inch or 14-inch one and an 8-inch one. It can be deduced that the smaller Surface Pro 4 might be Microsoft's way of competing with Apple's iPad Mini series. The report also noted that an upgrade in the device's RAM is expected. Note that the current Surface Pro 3 has an 8 GB RAM.
The Surface Pro 4, just like its predecessor Surface Pro 3, will still boast of its laptop and tablet capabilities. Master Herald said the device is called a "laplet" as it is more of a laptop and tablet packed into one due to its attachable keyboard. The International Business Times meanwhile says that the 14-inch Surface Pro 4 will support the same display resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels its predecessor has.
Microsoft has yet to confirm all these rumors.
