Game publisher Jagex announced on December 16 that Transformers Universe MMO on PC will shut down due to poor response.

IGN reported that "Transformers Universe" was initially announced in 2011 as a free-to-play MMO. After six months of beta testing, the game publishers decided to close down the game due to minimal reception from gamers.

Jagex and Hasbro confirmed the closure of the game in its beta testing phase, "We're hugely disappointed, but the game will be closing over the coming weeks before its full closure at 10 a.m. GMT [5 a.m. EST, 2 a.m. PST or 9 p.m. Australian] on 31st January 2015."

On TransformersUniverse.com, the developers posted, "As a team, we can't thank players enough for the support that they have shown us over the last few years of development, and even more so during our beta period."

The message continued, "The shutdown period will begin from today," it said. "As part of the winding down we will be refunding all those that have purchased a Founders Pack, as well as anyone that has purchased relic bundles and starter packs. These refunds should be all processed in the next 30 days.

"Once again we want to thank all of the players that have played Transformers Universe and all those that have worked on the project", stated the game publishers.

Furthermore, Jagex said that they were refunding beta testers who purchased Starter Packs, Founder's Packs and Relics.

Jagex did not specify the reasons why "Transformers Universe MMO" was shut down but the statement did mention that both Jagex and Hasbro (the game license owner) are realigning their businesses  and would want to focus on their plans for the coming year.

The publishers might transfer from licensed games or the beta test simply showed that it was not going to be a lucrative project. Game Spot reported that the decision to close the game was made both by Jagex and Hasbro. Jagex will proceed to work on its own IP like RuneScape. Meanwhile, Hasbro will also pursue alternative digital gaming opportunities, including "Transformers: Battle Tactics" for mobile gamers.

The game developers further stated that they understand how some people are going to be upset by the news. They asked fans to "bear in mind that this is obviously a challenging time for all involved, especially the CM team. There will be plenty of things we can't comment on, so please respect their position."
