Nokia isn't staying away from the smartphone battle and will enter the fray with Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S3 with the Lumia 920.
The latest Nokia device will be released in November, but until then, what are the specifications and what do terms such as resolution, Snapdragon, camera, and networks, and more.
Networks: The Nokia Lumia 920 will be available in 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks. When it comes to speed, the Gs do matter.
According to Webopedia, the terms are from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an intergovernmental organization that develops telecommunications. This organization is even recognized as a United Nations agency back in 1947.
3G is an ITU specification, and it stands for third generation. With 3G, the bandwidth is increased to 384 kilobites (kbps), which measures data transfer speeds. 4G is the fourth generation and enables data and streaming multimedia at higher speeds. The Long Term Evolution, or LTE, was developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) that helps provides an increase of speeds up to 10 times more compared to 3G networks. Verizon currently has the most 4G coverage in the US.
Display/Screen Size: The Lumia 920 has a height of 130.3mm and a width of 70.8mm. Its weight stands at 185g with a thickness of 10.7mm. The smartphone is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass, which is a hardened glass, according to GSM Arena. The screen measures at 4.5-inches and in PureMotion HD+ display.
According to Nokia, the PureMotion HD+ display offers the best display experience on a smartphone and its better than HD resolution with fast refresh rate.
Resolution: The resolution of the screen is will be 1,280x768 with 332 ppi (pixels per inch).
The resolution indicates the number of dots per inch (DPI). The higher the DPI, then the higher the resolution, for example, the Lumia 920 stands at 1,280x768 resolution, then there are 983,040 dots per square inch. This also means the device will be capable of displaying 1,280 distinctive dots, or pixels, on each of the 768 lines.
Memory (GB/RAM): The device will be will have an internal memory storage of 32 GB and 1 GB RAM, according to GSM Arena.
A GB is known as a gigabyte, and one gigabyte hold up to 1,024 megabytes. If it will offer 32GB, then it equals to 32,768 megabytes. The term "byte" is actually an abbreviation for "binary term," and is a unit of storage.
A RAM, short for Random Access Memory, is the most common type of computer memory found in devices.
Battery Capacity: The battery capacity for the Lumia 920 is 2,000 mAh.
Short for Milliampere-hour, mAh indicates how batteries are rated for capacity power. The higher the mAh, then the stronger and healthier the battery of the device. Due to the battery capacity, standby and talk time improves when the mAh is higher.
Standby time in 2G and 3G will be 400 hours. Talk time sees a slight difference between 2G and 3G, with the former having 17 hours maximum while 3G actually drops to 10 hours.
Wireless Connectivity (Bluetooth/Near Field Communication): The Lumia 920 features Wi-Fi, the Bluetooth 2.1 and will have Near Field Communication (NFC).
Bluetooth is a wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks.
NFC is a standards-based short-range wireless connectivity that helps the collaboration of similar devices that are in short-range.
Processor (CPU): The processor will be the Snapdragon S4 with a dual-core 1.5GHz. The processor is considered as the brains of the device and the most important element of the smartphone.
Qualcomm stated the Snapdragon is "Best-in-class performance that can run the most demanding applications, including 1080p HD videos, visually intensive 3D games and video, as well as High-Definition video conferencing."
Camera (megapixels): The rear-facing camera (meaning the camera on the back of the device) has 8.7-megapixels with a resolution of 3,264x2,448. The front-facing camera has a 1,280x960 resolution and 1.3-megapixels.
A megapixel means one million pixels. A pixel is short for "picture element" and is a single point in a graphic image. The quality of the pixels varies on the display's resolution.
Colors: The Lumia 920 will come in five colors: black, gray, red, yellow, and white.
What comes with the Lumia 920?
When purchasing the device, it will come with the Nokia Fast USB Charger AC-16, Nokia Headset WH-208, Charging and Data Cable, and a guide.
