Fans of Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones might have a second high-end model to look forward to before 2014 ends, but it will have to be seen if that will be the next iteration of the Galaxy S line.
According to The Wall Street Journal, an earnings call with Samsung mobile communications business senior vice president Kim Hyun-joon noted that the new smartphone would be launched globally and feature "new materials," though he didn't elaborate.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is already expected to be released by around September as the tech giant engages in its annual flexing contest against Apple and the coming iPhone 6. ValueWalk.com notes that a bigger "phablet-sized" iPhone targeting the Galaxy Note 4 will most likely be Apple's next release.
With the Samsung Galaxy S5 having been released earlier this year, it is unlikely that Samsung's other rumored smartphone will be the Galaxy S6. This next more premium smartphone with metal casing has had several monikers being tossed around including the "Galaxy F" or "Alpha," though Samsung itself has not confirmed or denied anything.
Although Samsung management has emphasized their interest in devices that are flexible, the reality of being able to launch a flexible device of their own is cloudy at this time. In 2013, they released the Galaxy Round, which had a curved screen, though it was largely viewed as more of a niche product for showcasing new technological advances.
For its part, PC Advisor states some expected specs from the Galaxy S6 even as the site also advises against expecting its release in 2014. With the trend of newer phone models having bigger displays, the Galaxy S6 will probably exceed the Galaxy S5's 5.1 inch screen, possibly as big as 5.5 inches.
Samsung's preferred display technology, the SuperAMOLED screen, will also likely remain with the S6. The expected screen resolution will either by Quad HD (1440 x 2560) or 4K (2160 x 3840), even though the Note 4 is expected to be Samsung's first 4K smartphone.
The Galaxy S6 will more than likely have a Qualcomm 64-bit processor to power it and the choice will probably end up being either the Snapdragon 808 or Snapdragon 810. It remains to be seen what the camera resolution for the Galaxy S6 will be, but Samsung will either stay with the current 16 megapixel resolution or perhaps jump up to 20 megapixels.
