The shell of the PlayStation 4 just got almost as colorful as the games it usually plays. At least that was the case for one very limited edition PS4 that was recently sold to raise money for charity and was colored based on LGBT Pride's Rainbow Flag.
A report from IGN.com notes that this unit, affectionately called "the GayStation Edition," was sold by Swedish company Webhallen for 28,300 Swedish kroner or approximately $4,118. Proceeds from the sale were then given to a charity known for supporting the LGBT community, RFSL.
Colored in bars of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and indigo with a pixilated heart in the middle, the console is currently one-of-a-kind as neither Sony nor Webhall have indicated plans to make more of the colorful variant.
Up until now, Sony's PlayStation 4 had only been available in black. However, Techno Buffalo reported this past July that although a white PS4 will be sold as a bundle with "Destiny" on September 9, the white PS4 console will be available by itself for at least the European market. Sony Worldwide Studios Head Shuhei Yoshida is the source for this information, with no news yet if the standalone console will be sold in Japan or North America.
In an interview with Polygon, Microsoft mentioned that they will also sell a white version of their own Xbox One bundled with open-world action title "Sunset Overdrive" later this year. This past November, Microsoft employees were given exclusive access to white Xbox consoles. Therefore, this would mark the first time the white Xbox One will be made available to the general public.
As it stands, there is no news yet regarding the price of the "Sunset Overdrive bundle," but the Insomniac Games title is launching by itself on September 28 exclusively for the Xbox One console.
RFSL is the Riksförbundet för homosexuellas, bisexuellas och transpersoners rättigheter or The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights. It is a non-profit organization that works with and for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT). It is non-partisan and not affiliated with any religious organization. Founded in 1950 and currently boasting of 4,000 members, it is one of the world's oldest LGBT organizations.
