Samsung has taken some heavy blows this past month. After losing a legal battle in the United States against Apple and being fined $1 billion, the Korean company now faces the prospect of having its flagship smartphone banned from the United States. Apple has submitted a wish-banlist to the courts that includes the Galaxy S3 smartphone. Despite this possible scenario in the future, Samsung does have something to be proud of: the Galaxy S3 is the best-selling smartphone in the United States now.
A report released by Canaccord Genuity shows that the Galaxy S3 smartphone was the best-selling smartphone in Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The iPhone 4S was still the best selling smartphone for AT&T.
"We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market," said one of the firm's analysts, T. Michael Walkley.
He did state, however, that with 4G LTE, the soon-to-be-released iPhone 5 will probably put Apple back on top.
The Galaxy S3 sold over 10 million units in its first month, and Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has predicted that the iPhone 5 could sell that much in the last nine days of September.
The report does show that throughout May, June, and July, the iPhone 4S was the best-selling smartphone for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, although in July, the Galaxy S3 overtook the iPhone 4S in Verizon. The Galaxy S3 was the best-selling phone in July and August for T-Mobile, which does not carry the iPhone.
The Galaxy S3's success is a good sign for Samsung. There is a fair amount of the public who feel that Apple is bullying competitors in courtrooms to keep their market dominance, and the more support Samsung has for its Galaxy S3 the better long-term prospects that Android phones and Samsung have.
