"The Great Gatsby" has won Best Art Direction for a Period film at the Art Directors Guild awards.
"Gatsby's" production designer Catherine Martin also took home her second ADG, beating out heavy weights "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle." Meanwhile, Spike Jonze's film "Her" won the Best Art Direction award for a Contemporary Film while "Gravity" won in the Fantasy category.
The win is significant because most of the time the winner of the ADG ends up going home with the Oscar. In this case all three winners are nominated for the Oscars along with "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle." However, the news is big for "The Great Gatsby" as most pundits have already predicted it as the front-runner. Additionally, the movie already won the Art Dierction award at the Critics Choice and four other critics' societies.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is known for also choosing period films in the category. The past winners with the exception of 2010 and 2009 were all nominated for the ADG in the period category. Recent winners include "Lincoln," "Hugo," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," and "There Will Be Blood."
The ADG also handed out awards in TV. Among the winners included "Game of Thrones," "Behind the Candelabra, "Veep," "The 67th Annual Tony Awards," "Portlandia" and "Battlestar Galactica."
Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese was given the Cinematic Imagery Award and "Lincoln's" Art director Rick Carter was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award.
