Will this development give Microsoft a run for its money?

PlayStation maker Sony has revealed that it will be launching "a cloud-based gaming service that will allow users to stream PlayStation games on their TVs, tablets and smartphones, as well as their PlayStation consoles," said The Telegraph.

Wow. That means you can play your favorite PS games on your own tablet!

This update was announced Tuesday by Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Andrew House during the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in Las Vegas. He also explained the details of the upcoming offering, saying that it is based on Gaikai's technology, which the company acquired in 2012.

The said service is dubbed "PlayStation Now" and will only require gamers to have a screen and a controller in order to access it. It will support PS3 games, too.

"Streaming technology has, for the last few years, represented a clear opportunity for bringing a refined gaming experience to wider devices, but it has lacked the prominence to drive mass adoption," Mindshare U.K. Strategist Dubose Cole told The Telegraph. "PlayStation Now will bring the back catalogue and scale to this technology in a way that can tangibly bring the console experience to a wide portfolio of devices, from mobile to Smart TV."

At the CES event, Sony made 4 demos available for testing, according to CNN's Adrian Covert. "Aside from the load time, there weren't any big hang ups or glitches in the network, though it remains to be seen how it holds up once it is available to the public," Covert observed.

His view was shared by Time's Matt Peckham, who gave this feedback: "Doubtless Sony's going to put on its best show at CES 2014 with an insanely fast (and thus non-representative) network backbone, but in the real world, where you can't lock in consistent Internet speeds, I'm concerned this sort of game experience is still going to be limited to demoing games before buying local disc-based or digital versions."

While pricing has not been mentioned, Sony has promised a June release for PlayStation Now.
