The wave of the future is here, as smartwatches have become the new battleground for many consumer technology companies. Now, major companies such as Samsung, Google, Sony and others are going into the "wearable" technology market, as reported in BGR.com.
As Google is trailblazing in the "Glass" technology, a new war is brewing this time in the smartwatch market. While an initial breakthrough was released by Samsung's Galaxy Gear some months back, Sony now has introduced Smartwatch 2.
In a review for the Sony gadget published on Slashgear, the device has four buttons and a touchscreen, replicating the design of the Experia Z released in 2012. It is also water resistant and not just waterproofed, having IP57 water resistance. It also has mini apps to provide the user connectivity as well.
IBNLive also reported that the Sony Smartwatch 2 is cheaper by about 33% compared to the competition. It is also compatible with a number of Android powered phones, not just those offered by Sony.
In another review, Wired UK said that "this device is an addition to a smartphone instead of a standalone device" and has fewer features compared to the Galaxy Gear. There is no camera unlike Samsung's watch but has a menu of 140 apps available, which is far greater in number compared to Samsung.
T3 reported tht the Sony Smartwatch 2 would be available by September 2013 and would cost around £199.99 while the Galaxy Gear would be retailing at $299 in the United States.
Overall, the functionality of the Sony Smartwatch 2 works best as a complement to a handheld device as it has seamless connectivity for many Android powered smartphones and/or computers. The cost is far lower with many more apps for options. Depending on one's need, the smartwatch is clearly here to stay.
