The upcoming 2014 Academy Awards will not only have Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity" among its favorites for Best Movie, but its spin-off, "Aningaaq", directed by his son Jonás Cuarón, could compete for Best Short Film.
The project, written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón's son, Jonás, delves into a scene in the main movie, where Sandra Bullock's character manages to make an emergency call to Earth after getting stranded in space. The man that answers the call replies in a language unknown to her.
The new story, directed by Jonás, who co-wrote "Gravity" along with his father, explores the character that replies to Dr. Ryan Stone's (Bullock) call. The result is a 7-minute-long short film titled "Aningaaq", which has been widely praised by critics and has been proposed to compete in the upcoming Academy Awards.
According to CNN, Warned Bros. planned to include the short as bonus material in Gravity's Blu-ray release; however, the exhibition of Jonás' project in various international film festivals got the studio to propose the short to compete in the Academy Awards.
The decision comes in addition to the great success Alfonso Cuarón's movie has achieved, which has been praised for its special effects and its unsettling script.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, if the movie is accepted to compete in the 2014 Academy Awards, this would be the first time a movie and its spin-off compete in the same ceremony.
The official list of nominees will be released on January 16th.
