While Android 4.4 KitKat has many Android owners excited and eager about upcoming updates, it's beginning to look like the light's flickered out for the Samsung Galaxy S2.
There's practically no chance that the Samsung Galaxy S2 will receive Android 4.4 KitKat, according to most reports circulating around the Internet. Samsung has not commented on the matter, and even though it remains unconfirmed, the evidence (barring a miracle, of course) all points in this direction.
Samsung Galaxy S2s are still stuck on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, after early 2013 reports indicated that the 2011 flagship phone would receive Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Sadly, as time wore on, and Samsung Android 4.2 development ran into problems even on the newer Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 phones, the Galaxy S2 Android 4.2 upgrade was speculated to have been scrapped.
However, in light of the recent slew of updates Samsung is pushing out, new rumors have sparked up hinting at an Android 4.2 update for the Galaxy S2. Given the lack of comment from Samsung, and the fact that Samsung is more interested in having its lineup on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (which allows for full Galaxy Gear connectivity), it's safe to say that even if there is an update coming for the Galaxy S2, it won't happen soon. There was never any serious chatter about an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S2.
Android 4.4 KitKat is optimized to run on devices with as little as 512MB RAM, and while the Galaxy S2 contains 1GB RAM, the device is two years old, meaning most OEMs would have stopped support for the handset. In all likeliness, Galaxy S2 owners who want to fiddle around with newer Androids would do best to pick up a newer handset this holiday season.
