"Thor: The Dark World" won the box office over the weekend defeating holdovers "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" and "Free Birds."
The new sequel to the Marvel franchise made $86 million in 3,841 theaters and averaged an outstanding $22,418 per theater. The weekend was up $20 million from the original film's first weekend, which brought in $65.7 million during its opening in 2011.
"Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" continued its successful run making $11.3 million and brought its total gross to $78 million. The film will most likely hit the $100 million mark by next week.
"Free Birds" and "Last Vegas" were also successful in their second weekends. "Free Birds" made $11.1 million and brought its total to $30 million. The film looks like it will make $60 million by the end of its run. Meanwhile, "Last Vegas" made $11.1 million and has now made $33 million. The film will also make about $60 million by the end of its run.
Last weekend's No. 1 film "Ender's Game" continued to flop. The film dropped 62 percent and made $10.2 million. The $110 million production has now made $44 million and looks to ends its run with $60-$75 million becoming the latest science fiction film to fail at the box office.
"Gravity" continued its successful run and made $8.4 million. The movie has already made $231 million and is still on track for $275 million. Meanwhile, Oscar contenders "12 Years A Slave" and "All Is Lost" expanded nationwide. "12 Years A Slave" made $6.6 million in 1,144 theaters and has now made $17.3 million overall. Meanwhile, "All Is Lost" grossed $1.2 million in 401 theaters.
"Captain Phillips" also continued its successful run and made $5.8 million. The film has already made $90 million and will end its run north of $100 million.
Another Oscar contender, "The Book Thief," opened at the box office to a solid, if not spectacular, start. The movie made $108,000 theaters for an estimated $27,000 per theater.
