iOS vs. Android vs. Windows Phone Market Share for October 2013: Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) Total 86 Percent of Mobile and Tablet Market Share, Says Report

The latest mobile and tablet operating system market share has been released, and Apple's iOS has easily taken the top spot for October.

According to NetMarketShare, the month of October saw Apple's mobile operating system account for 55.39 percent of the smartphone and tablet market share worldwide. The percentage for iOS is an increase of 1.71 points from the 53.68 percent NetMarketShare calculated for September's figures.

Google's Android platform saw a minor increase in their smartphone and tablet operating system market share as well for October. Android garnered 30.58 percent of the market share, which is up from the 29.42 percent during the month of September.

Android and iOS easily dominated the worldwide smartphone and tablet market share with a combined 85.97 percent for October.

NetMarketShare's market share percentages for the remaining mobile and tablet operating systems received less than 10 percentage points.

Java ME finished at third place with 6.47 percent while Symbian accounted for fourth place and 3.58 percent. Java ME and Symbian's market share percentages are down from September.

The decline of BlackBerry continued, according to NetMarketShare, as the mobile platform received 3.26 percent in September but dropped to 2.55 percent during October.

Amazon's Kindle placed ahead of Microsoft's Windows Phone. Kindle garnered 0.78 percent to Windows Phone's 0.5 percent.
