Sprint Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners are in for a real treat as the carrier has started rolling out an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the device the same day Google finally revealed Android 4.4 KitKat.
The update, software version GJ04, according to the changelog, seems to contain no major fixes or additions other than bumping up the Android operating system from 4.2.1 to 4.3.
The Android 4.3 Galaxy Nexus update is currently being pushed out over the air, but Sprint warns that not all handsets will get it at the same time and device selection is random. Like all over-the-air updates, this one is being released in batches, and should land on all Sprint Galaxy Nexus phones over a 10-21 day period, according to Sprint. As always, have the device charged and tethered to a Wi-Fi connection.
There's no word whether Verizon, the only other U.S. carrier to offer the CDMA-based Galaxy Nexus, will release its own similar update.
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean won't be a major change from Android 4.2, but it will improve system performance with TRIM support, add always-on Wi-Fi scanning. In addition, there are more language options and other nifty shortcuts like the auto dialer than ever before.
The release of the update comes on the same day Google announced details of the newer, more exciting Android 4.4 KitKat to the world. Sadly, if the U.S. carrier-oriented Galaxy Nexus's fate is similar to its unlocked brethren, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean might be the last upgrade the device ever sees.
