Sprint has officially started pushing out the new Premium Suite upgrade for the Samsung Galaxy S4, making it the second U.S. carrier to release Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for the device.
The update, firmware L720VPUAMJA, is available for download over-the-air and weighs in at a hefty 537MB. The standard applies here: you'll want the Galaxy S4 charged and tethered to a Wi-Fi connection before attempting to download the patch.
According to the official Samsung support page, the update bumps up the operating system to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, adds Galaxy Gear compatibility, and brings Samsung's KNOX security software to the device.
Sprint is the second major U.S. carrier to roll out the update, coming in after Verizon. Big Red, not known for its timely Android updates, surprised everyone by being the first carrier out of the gate to release the Galaxy S4 Premium Suite upgrade. It's currently unclear when carriers AT&T and T-Mobile will release their firmwares.
Samsung announced in early September that it would pursuing an aggressive Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update campaign across its flagship lineup. The Galaxy S4 is the first of Samsung's mainstays to receive the update (the newer Galaxy Note 3 comes with all the goodies right out of the box) and older devices like the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will soon follow. The reason Android 4.3 is so important to Samsung is because it contains Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, which is a requirement for full connectivity with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
