Android easily crushed its nearest competitors including Apple's iOS, Microsoft's Windows Phone, and BlackBerry.
Android had a convincing lead of 67 points ahead second place mobile operating system, iOS. Apple's mobile platform finished second with 14 percent during the latest quarter results this year.
Despite the high percentage point difference between Android and iOS, the Apple smartphone operating system managed to comfortably finish ahead of third places' Windows Phone.
Microsoft's smartphone platform garnered four percent during 2013's third quarter. Although Windows Phone didn't manage to secure double-digit percentages, it isn't bad news for Microsoft.
"The race for the third ecosystem is clearly favoring Windows Phone with [four percent] market share, over BlackBerry's 1.5 [percent], but there remains little opportunity for new market entrants to make a significant impact on Android's dominance," stated senior analyst Michael Morgan.
According to ABI Research, 438 million handsets were shipped during the third quarter of 2013. From the aforementioned handset figures, 244 million were smartphones. ABI Research noted Samsung sold more phones than Apple, which accounted for 35 percent to 14 percent, respectively.
