The new operating system made an impression on Web traffic in the U.S. and Canada.
According to Chitika Insights, devices with the OS X Mavericks platform accounted for 5.5 percent of the North American Web traffic within 24 hours of its release. The adoption rate of the new Apple operating system easily topped predecessor OS X Mountain Lion, which amounted for 1.6 percent during the same period in 2012.
Chitika Insights noted the OS X Mavericks adoption increase was likely due to the price tag of the operating system, which is free. OS X Mountain Lion launched in late 2012 for $19.99.
"While Mountain Lion wasn't particularly expensive ($19.99), it's likely the lack of a price tag on Mavericks spurred additional users to upgrade in the early going," wrote Chitika Insights.
The report sampled millions of U.S. and Canadian Mac OS X-based online ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network between Oct. 22 and Oct. 23.
OS X Mavericks' features include iBooks, a maps app, a streamlined Calender, updated Safari, iCloud Keychain, multi-display support, and Finder Tab and Tags for improved organization.
"Mavericks is an incredible release, which introduces significant new apps and features, while also improving the performance and battery life of your Mac," said Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi, in a statement. "We want every Mac user to experience the latest features, the most advanced technologies, and the strongest security. We believe the best way to do this is to begin a new era of personal computing software where OS upgrades are free."
