Amazon.com has started shipping the most recent addition to the Kindle Fire HD lineup, the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX. The smallest of the new HDX tablets was announced in late September, showing a bold new direction for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets.

The Kindle Fire HDX comes with a higher resolution screen than Amazon has ever provided, even in the Kindle Fire HD. It's basically Amazon's version of the high-spec workhorse tablet. It comes in a 7-inch and 8.9-inch version, the latter of which will begin shipping later in November.

Right now, the Kindle Fire HDX model you're going to get has a 1080p full HD Resolution - specifically 1920 x 1200p with a 323 pixel-per-inch pixel density -that rivals the new Google Nexus 7 2 tablet.

Powering the tablet is a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, which is the cutting-edge in mobile processors at the moment, which even out-powers Google's own 7-inch tablet.

Other features of the Kindle Fire HDX include up to 64GB of storage (with less expensive options of 16GB and 32GB), battery that supposedly gives you up to 11 hours of mixed use and 17 hours of reading time, and Amazon's 24/7 "Mayday" live-chat support line and concierge service, which is available at a touch of a button.

Amazon is selling the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX - WiFi-only - for $229 for the 16GB version. LTE and 8.9-inch versions of the Kindle Fire HDX will cost more, and are shipping later in November.
