All Googly eyes are on the upcoming Nexus 5 announcement, but the Mountain View search giant may have another ace up its sleeve. According to some new rumors, Google is gearing up to finally releasing an LTE model of its popular 2012 phone, the Nexus 4.
For those who don't remember, the Google Nexus 4 released in 2012 to much fanfare, running out of stock for months. Priced at $299 and with no contracts or fees attached, the phone was the perfect device for many — except that it lacked LTE support. An early hack allowed some users to hop on LTE networks, but it was never a real fix. Instead, Google may rectify all that by offering an LTE Nexus 4 in the coming weeks.
Website Android Geeks recently reported that "a source close to the Mountain View-based giant who wished to remain anonymous" informed them that Google's Nexus 5 would start off at $399 instead of $299 because Google would also be announcing an LTE Nexus 4 alongside the newer flagship. According to the report, a 16GB LTE Nexus 4 would cost $299 and a 32GB LTE Nexus 4 would run $349.
The LTE Nexus 4 will apparently keep the same specs as the normal Nexus 4 released 2012, but with the addition of LTE support.
Bear in mind that none of this has been confirmed, and this isn't the first time we've heard of Google cooking up an LTE-friendly version of the popular Nexus 4. Still, it's encouraging to those looking for a cheap, reliable handset this holiday season, so we'll simply have to wait and see. Google is expected to make an announcement regarding the Nexus 5, Android 4.4 KitKat, (and possibly) the LTE Nexus 4 sometime before the end of October.
