Sony Xperia Z1 Update Release Date: New Wi-Fi-Improving Firmware Rolls Out

Sony's Xperia Z1 has barely hit the United States, but it looks like there's already an update for the flagship handset.

Sony Xperia Z1 owners should be able to snag firmware 14.1.G.2.257 over the air. The update increases the Xperia Z1's firmware from 14.1.G.1.XXX to 14.1.G.2.XXX, indicating that there should be a fair amount of fixes. As of now, the patch is rolling out for the HSPA+ C6902 Xperia Z1 and the LTE C6903 model. The patch does not include Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which should release for the smartphone in a later, separate update.

While it's hard to discern what exactly the firmware brings other than the usual security and bug fixes, it looks like the upgrade will fix some Wi-Fi issues that have been plaguing Xperia Z1 owners. According to Xperia Guide, firmware 14.1.G.2.257 contains the following changes:

"1) Automatic power-off issue fixed.

2) Wi-Fi range improved.

3) Touch sensitivity is better from previous firmware

4) Optimized backlight option is gone now, and is permanently ON now."

Sony has been aggressively updating its Xperia Z lineup, with quite a few patches over the past few weeks. The Xperia Z1 recently received an upgrade to the Info Eye app, and given Sony's rate of development, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean shouldn't be too far off.
