After a jittery start that coincided with the company's fiscal crisis, BlackBerry Messaging app for iPhone, Android, and other iOS devices is finally on its way.
The chief marketing officer for BlackBerry, Frank Boulben said in a letter to BlackBerry customers on Monday that the BBM messenger app will be available for Android and iOS "within days," according to a report from Reuters.
The letter also pressed that, while BlackBerry has received a lot of negative press in the last few weeks, BlackBerry is "here to stay." The letter tried to reassure customers that the fundamentals of the company are sound and that customers should not worry:
"We want customers to know that they can continue to count on us - we are here to stay. We have substantial cash on our balance sheet and we have no debt. We are restructuring our cost base and this is a very painful transition, but it will make us financially stronger and we want to get that message directly to our customers."
In late September, problems for BlackBerry reached a head when the company decided to take BlackBerry off of the market, searching for a private investor, or many, to take the company off of Wall Street. It appears the name change away from Research in Motion, the new BlackBerry 10 operating system, and the new range of touchscreen devices were not enough to keep BlackBerry from its long-term popularity problem.
To pile problem on top of problem, the BBM app - one of the only BlackBerry brands that is popular, especially for Latinos keeping in touch across national boundaries - has been delayed for iOS and Android. That's because an unofficial, data-devouring Android version of BBM leaked out and started causing problems for BlackBerry's backend.
Hopefully all of that is behind BlackBerry, and we can finally get the BBM app for Android and iOS, and stop staring at the "BBM IS COMING TO ANDROID AND iPHONE" banner at the top of BBM's official website.
