Microsoft has made an admission. The Redmond-based organization revealed the "RT" branding was a mistake.
In late September, Microsoft announced the second-generation Surface tablets and absent from the new devices were the "RT" moniker.

According to Surface's Product Marketing Manager Jack Cowett, a reason why the "RT" branding was removed from the second-generation tablets was to eliminate confusion of the two Surfaces.
"We think that there was some confusion in the market last year on the difference between Surface RT and Surface Pro," said Cowett. "We want to help make it easier for people, and these are two different products designed for two different people."
Microsoft now has a clean slate in promoting the two new Surface tablets as the term "Pro" really makes the difference. The two new tablets, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, are to be released in late October.
The new Surface tablets have been available for pre-orders since Sept. 24 and but will be released across 22 markets including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States. China, however, will get to see the tablets by early November.
As seen on the online Microsoft Store, the Surface 2's 32GB model, priced at $449, is expected to ship by Oct. 21. The 64GB of the Surface 2, however, is expected to ship on Oct. 25 with a price tag $549.
The Surface Pro 2's 64GB model, with a price tag of $899, is expected to ship by Oct. 21. The 128GB model, priced at $999, is set to ship by Oct. 25. The 256GB and 512GB models are expected to ship on Oct. 29 and are priced at $1,299 and $1,799, respectively.
One of the new features on the Surface 2 includes a two-stage kickstand, which Cowett stated was created due to public feedback.
"We got quite a lot of really good feedback from the original Surface Pro, but one thing people said to us was, 'hey if you really want us to use this thing on your lap, you need to make it easier to use as a laptop,'" Cowett added, via ARN. "We've added a second angle for the kickstand, so it's much more comfortable to use on your lap. It's a tiny change but it makes a huge difference."
