Latin American films continued to dominate the American box office over the weekend.
"Gravity" continued its No. 1 position making an estimated $44.2 million at the box office. The film broke another record as it only dropped an estimated 21 percent from it's opening weekend. The phenomenon is rare considering the movie did not open during the holiday season or the summer. "Gravity" has now made an estimated $123 million and is likely to gross $200 million by the end of its run.
"Pulling Strings" continued its strong run during its second weekend. The film made an estimated $1 million bringing its total gross to $4.1 million. While it will not top Eugenio Derbez's "Instructions Not Included," the movie will become one of Pantelion's highest growing films.
Derbez's film also continued its success making $1 million. The movie has already made $42.6 million and has become the fourth highest grossing foreign film of all time.
The one Latin American film that flopped however was "Machete Kills." The Robert Rodriguez film, which stars Danny Trejo, Sofia Vergara, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, and Michelle Rodriguez, opened to $3.7 million, making $7 million less than the original "Machete," which opened in 2010.
Meanwhile, Oscar contender "Captain Phillips" grossed $26 million in its opening weekend and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" continued to appeal to audiences making $14.2 million. Relativty's "Romeo and Juliet" was one of the biggest failures in recent times. The film opened in 461 theaters and only made $509,000. The average per theater was only $1,000, making it one of the worst openings of the year.
