It's still 2013 and Samsung is still riding on the Galaxy S4 handset, but that hasn't stopped the technosphere from starting up the rumor mill about Samsung's next-gen Galaxy S handset, presumably called the Galaxy S5. The latest leak from Korean news outlet ETNews indicates that the Galaxy S5 will be waterproof and dustproof right out of the box.
The Samsung Galaxy S5's ruggedness should then be able to compete with rival smartphones like the Sony Xperia Z lineup, which made a splash (no pun intended) when it became the first major market flagship handset to be waterproof and dustproof. Samsung did later release a Galaxy S4 "Active" version that sported the same features, although at a cost — the device is weaker under the hood than the normal Galaxy S4.
Samsung could be looking to change that strategy by making the Samsung Galaxy S5 rugged-ready right out of the box, across the board. This should ensure that all Samsung Galaxy S5s will be waterproof and dustproof without sacrificing high-end hardware.
Samsung is also said to be working on a Galaxy Note 3 Active version, which will reportedly come equipped with a flexible display.
Of course, it's still too early to tell, and Samsung is still focused on pushing the Galaxy S4, which seems to have hit a bit of a sales rough patch recently. Remember, the Galaxy S5 is still six months away, so it's best to treat any information with a healthy dose of salt.
Other Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors so far indicate the phone will have a metal casing and a 64-bit processor.
