The first place finish accounted for the three months ending in August this year. The 55.1 percent, however, is down 5.6 percent when comparing the three months ending in August 2012, when the Google mobile platform accounted for 60.7 percent of the market share.
Apple, however, saw a healthy increase in their smartphone operating system market share. Apple's iOS platform finished with 39.3 percent by the end of August 2013, which is a 5.4 percent increase from the same period in 2012.
Microsoft's Windows Phone also saw an increase in its numbers as it finished in third place. Windows Phone only saw an increase of 0.4 percent, which was enough to give the Microsoft smartphone platform 3 percent of the market share for the three months ending in August 2013.
BlackBerry rounded out the top four with 1.8 percent, down from the 2.1 percent it had garnered by the end of August 2012.
Kantar Worldpanel compiled its data from conducting 240,000 interviews per year and tracking mobile phone behavior.
