LG is preparing a new type of smartphone that will take advantage of plastic OLED screen technology to bring users a curved display, according to a new report by CNET.
The name being used for this new model of smartphone is the G Flex, and the phone will compete with the curved smartphone that Samsung is also preparing to unveil, along with a rumored model of the Galaxy Note 3 that will have a curved display.
It should be noted that, while the G Flex will have a curved design to go with the curved screen, this technology does not allow the phone to bend and flex like it was made of rubber. Instead, this curved display will function like any other smartphone screen, with the exception that the curved shape will fit the shape of a user's face and not be boxy and potentially awkward to handle like rectangular devices. The Motorola Moto X has a similar design, but went with a curved body rather than a curved screen to fit more comfortably in a user's hand.
Previously, LG had shown off their OLED technology with a 55-inch television that had a curved design, but needless to say the G Flex will not be quite that big. The rumored length of the display for the device is around 6 inches, which would put it above devices such as the Xperia Z1, but not quite as big enough to border on phablet sized. A curved screen should help keep the device slim even with the large screen size.
No release date has been set for the G Flex, but the device is rumored to appear in November. However, LG has yet to confirm the existence of the so-called G Flex or even confirm the name of this curved smartphone, so the date (and name) could change.
As for the rest of the specs for the G Flex, it is unclear what kind of tech will power the device. No photos have been leaked of the device, and only a sketch of the basic shape of the device has been revealed, but considering the tech that is going into the display, it would not be surprising if the device has other top of the line technology under the hood.
