It looks like HTC beat Samsung to the punch. The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has finally released an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for its 2012 flagship device the HTC One on its home turf, with the United States set to get the upgrade soon as well.
HTC has not released an official statement, but reports from users are flooding in that HTC Ones in Taiwan are in the midst of an Android 4.3 rollout. The software update, labeled 3.18.709.2, weighs in at a hefty 512MB and requires the handset to be tethered to a Wi-Fi connection.
According to the System Update screen, the upgrade includes Android 4.3, a battery charging animation in power-off state, improvements to color contrasts in low light situations and a feature that allows users to add a soundtrack to video highlights.
The release of a Taiwan HTC One Android 4.3 upgrade shows HTC is on track to push out Android 4.3 in other parts of the world. While international variants tend to get Android updates before U.S. carrier-tied models, word around town is that it will be the other way around this time.
American HTC Ones should expect an Android 4.3 update to begin hitting the airwaves in late September/early October. The only downside to the early release is that U.S. HTC Ones will not receive the new Sense 5.5 UI. International HTC Ones should get Android 4.3 with Sense 5.5 sometime in October or November. The Sense 5.0 to Sense 5.5 should then roll out as a separate update in the United States sometime after.
Android 4.3 contains very little surface level changes over Android 4.2. Instead, most of the improvements can be found under the hood.
