Built-in game DVR is one of the biggest innovations featured on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and one of the most anticipated aspects of the upcoming systems, but not everyone will be able to enjoy the technology to its fullest when release day comes aorund. Microsoft's Albert Penello recently spoke to Destructoid about the Xbox One, and revealed that at launch users will only be able to share DVR content via Xbox Live, and not through other forms of media such as Facebook and Youtube.
The Xbox One will eventually support social media sharing, with the feature hopefully launching sometime in 2014. This is a big blow for those hoping to use the service to share content either as Let's Play videos or across wider platforms. It will be interesting to see if the limitations affect the use of the game DVR, or if players are content to share content with people on their friends list.
Penello also previewed the Xbox One's revamped homepage and other features that will help make game capture videos easy for users to access and upload. Players will be able to pin apps to the side of the screen during gameplay, including the Xbox One's Upload Studio, according to Penello. With a voice command to the Kinect, players can also instantly capture the last 30 seconds of a game and then bring that clip to the Upload Studio. Users looking to record longer videos can also use the DVR feature to capture the last five minutes of gameplay automatically. From there, players can edit the footage and add a voice-over before saving it and sharing it with their friends list. The footage is captured at 720p resolution at 30 frames per second.
While the Xbox One may not have a share button like the Sony PlayStation 4, this feature should help users share their experiences playing the Xbox One, even if they won't initially be able to share this footage over social media outlets and video sharing websites such as Youtube. The next-gen consoles will allow users to become their own amateur filmmakers with just a click of a button or a spoken word to the Kinect.
