Samsung recently promised to have its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone updated to Android 4.3 in October and it looks like the South Korean electronics giant will be keeping its word. Screenshots of a Galaxy S4 (non-Google Play edition) running Android 4.3 have already surfaced, indicating the build might be close to completion.
The screenshots don't reveal much about the new build except that the firmware version is XXUBMA8. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.2.2 build is labeled XXUBMF8. Other than that, expect the Android 4.3 software update to contain the standard improvements Google has built in. These new features include OpenGL 3.0 support, always-on Wi-Fi location detection, enhanced security options and an increase in system performance.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 released with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box, making Android 4.3 the first bump the handset receives. Samsung announced at an early September conference that it was scrapping Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2, and instead aiming to have Android 4.3 roll out to both the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 in October. Samsung's Google Play edition of the Galaxy S4 has already received Android 4.3, beating fellow rival HTC's Google Play edition of the One smartphone to punch.
While most international owners can expect Android 4.3 for the Galaxy S4 in October, those with carrier-tied models (especially those in the United States) will most likely have to wait longer as carriers fill the patch with bloatware and approve it before finally sending it out over the airwaves.
