Apple decided not to live stream its unveiling of the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C on Tuesday, leaving only live blogs for technophiles to follow. However, soon after the event was over and Apple updated its Apple Store page to show off the technical specifications of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, the Cupertino giant posted its video of the event. Apple's announcement of the iPhone 5S and 5C included a performance at the end by Elvis Costello, who played a crowd favorite and then a new tune from his latest album.
But the center stage of the occasion was shared by the newest Apple flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5S, and its lower-cost cousin, the iPhone 5C.
The iPhone 5S was unveiled to have a 64-bit A7 processor, with twice as many transistors built into the chip as the A6 before it. Basically, just like the transition from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS, the "S" stands for speed - Apple says the iPhone 5S is twice as fast as the iPhone 5, in fact.
Also unveiled was the iPhone 5C, where the "C" stands for color (or cheap). According to Apple, the iPhone 5C doesn't feel cheap, though. Even though it's made with plastic, the iPhone 5C has a steel-reinforced frame underneath, and the plastic is unibody and treated to feel solid.
Both phones have a release date coming soon, as pre-orders for the iPhone 5C come on Friday, Sept. 13, and both phones will be in stores on Sept. 20. The iPhone 5S retails for $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, or $399 for 64GB. The iPhone 5C will be released for $99 for 16GB or $199 for 32GB. All prices quoted by Apple Tuesday were with a two-year agreement with a wireless carrier and no unlocked price was quoted.
