The 2013 US Open Championships finally reached its boiling point after two weeks of heated confrontations among the finest female tennis players in the world. Now, the time has come to determine the one rightful to hoist the crown in Flushing Meadows.
Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, both multiple Grand Slam winners and top-ranked netters, are all set for another action-packed championship battle on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
Williams has been super dominant the entire tourney, eliminating every opponent coming to her way in emphatic fashion. At age 31, Serena still continued to play at a level only few can match - one of them is Azarenka.
Azarenka entered the championship game with Williams, winning three of their 16 head-to-head singles matches. However, the 24-year old Belorussian beauty managed to beat the Williams twice in their last three meetings, the latest was her three-set victory over the American 2-6 6-2 7-6(6) in Cincinnati.
Moreover, Azarenka was just two points away from her first US Open Championship, but she just couldn't finish it off as Williams racked up four games in row to win her fourth crown in Flushing Meadows.
On Sunday, Williams is expecting a different player from Azarenka. After last year's collapse, the Belorussian netter is out to prove she deserves to win a Grand Slam in New York.
"I definitely feel like, when she plays me, she plays her best, by far," Williams told ESPN Women. "I have seen her play other players, and when I play her, I'm playing a totally different player. Obviously she brings her best game, yeah."
As for Azarenka, she knows the only way to beat a living legend like Williams was to bring her best game on the court. A level below that would only mean demolition at the hands of what she considers the greatest women's netter in history.
"She's [Williams] an amazing player. She's the greatest of all time," Azarenka told reporters via BBC.
