It didn't hit the rumor mill until pretty recently, but LG Electronics has already confirmed its rumored next generation tablet, the LG G Pad. The 8.3-inch tablet will be seen on the floor of the IFA 2013 consumer electronics show in Berlin next week, and will likely see a release date in late 2013.
The LG G Pad 8.3 tablet is the newest device to be added to LG Electronics' new "G Series" lineup, which is the company's flagship line since it dropped the Transformers-evoking "Optimus" name from its devices. The G Pad will debut at the trade show in Berlin, but LG Electronics has given us a sneak peak at some of the specs and features of the new handheld device.
Much like the LG G2 smartphone, unveiled earlier this summer, LG G Pad 8.3 is no slouch when it comes to hardware. The 8.3-inch tablet sports a Full HD display with 1920 x 1200 resolution, which the company claims is a first for an 8-inch tablet. Running the device is a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, clocked at 1.7GHz. Assisting the CPU is 2GB of RAM.
Powering the device is a 4,600 mAh battery, which LG says is "as light as a newspaper" but certainly delivers a lot of power to the device, though figures on battery life have not yet been released. As LG teased in a pre-IFA hype video, the LG G Pad is meant for portability, at just 8.3mm thick.
Other specs on the G Pad are more run-of-the-mill, including a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front shooter. Despite being released in late 2013, the LG G Pad will come with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean instead of the latest Android 4.3. That's probably because LG is layering some of its custom software on top, including "KnockOn," which debuted with the LG G2 and allows you to turn on the device without touching the power button; Slide Aside, which lets you "slide" open apps to the side with a three-finger swipe; and QSlide, which allows for three open on-screen apps at once.
The LG G Pad 8.3 will be hitting North America and the rest of the world in Q4 of this year, with information on its price to come.
