Ubisoft is getting ready to release several big titles in the fall, most notably Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Watch Dogs. In a new interview with Bloomberg, the developer's CEO Yes Guillemot revealed his feelings about the games, and how they represent the company's future on the new set of consoles appearing in November.
"There's a thirst for new products among our clients ... It's been a very long time since the last generation of consoles was released--there's very strong built-up appetite that transforms very quickly into preorders. And we haven't seen the end of it," Guillemot said to Bloomberg.
This is seen in the amount of preorders both games have received. Though Guillemot did not reveal specifics, he did state that preorders for Assassin's Creed 4 and Watch Dogs have been "very strong." Though Ubisoft had an impressive showing during the course of the past console cycle, Guillemot said that the company is ready to take advantage of the level playing field of next-gen consoles to climb to new heights:
"In the gaming industry, new consoles are an opportunity to reshuffle the cards. That's when market share changes are potentially the biggest ... We want to use this time to launch or relaunch our brands. With each generation we try to climb up a step and grab a few more points of market share."
It will be interesting to see how well both games are able to do, and it will be interesting to see if both games can break into the mainstream media with the launch of the new consoles. One way to further Ubisoft's gains is the movie deals both games have. Watch Dog was recently announced to have a movie in development with Sony during Gamescom, and there have been frequent rumors about an Assassin's Creed movie that has allegedly been in the works for quite some time.
While there will be some upheavals in the video game industry when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are launched later this year, Ubisoft is in as good of a position as any to continue its success. With several successful franchises on the roster and new games such as Watch Dogs and The Division prepared to wow gamers, Yves Guillemot's company should be able to make its mark on next-gen consoles.
