Sony is set to announce the release date of the highly-anticipated PlayStation 4 console on Tuesday at a press conference before the Gamescom 2013 in Cologne, Germany.
Sony has been relatively quiet about the PS4 release plans since it was first unveiled in February, but the Japanese hardware firm broke their silence and revealed the company's plans through a post on its PlayStation UK blog on Monday.
"For one week in August 2013, the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany becomes the centre of the gaming universe as the world's biggest publishers and developers invite you to check out the games that will light up the rest of the year and beyond. We'll kick off the show at 18:00 BST on 20 August 2013 with a briefing to media on our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita," Sony wrote.
"Once the Koelnmesse opens its doors to the public, PS4 leads the way as gamers get to try out the next generation in console gaming for the first time, and there's plenty to get excited about on PS3 and PS Vita too."
Since the next-generation console was announced by Sony in a two-hour event in New York City six months ago, we've seen countless predictions about the system's release date, with most suggesting a release date sometime in November.
Toys R Us made the biggest headline when they put up the console for preorder, claiming that the PS4 would be released on Dec. 13.
The International Business Times, on the other hand, suggested a Nov. 22 PS4 release date, basing it on Sony's traditional Friday release pattern, while also relating it to the potential Black Friday hype.
If recent speculation is to be believed, the console will land on Oct. 21, potentially more than one month earlier than the release of its rival console. CNET reported that Microsoft is allegedly planning to release the Xbox One on Nov. 29.
PS4 retail price is set at $399, which is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One retail price.
