Microsoft has already been confirmed as making an appearance at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany August 21-25, but it was unknown what they would bring to the expo, and if they will reveal the release date for the Xbox One. While the company has not confirmed that they will discuss the release date of their next-gen console, they have revealed to Gamespot what games will be available at the company's booth at the expo.

The makers of the Xbox One will actually have two opportunities to discuss their next-gen console and games. The first comes with the very first speech at Gamescom on August 21, with Phil Spencer giving a keynote speech on next gen gaming. Cologne mayor Jürgen Roters and German federal minister for economy and technology Philipp Rösler will be joining the Microsoft exec during his opening on the show. The day before, however, Microsoft will hold a special event highlighting some of the games that will be available for the Xbox One in the months after it is released. Microsoft released a brief statement about their goal for Gamescom:

"We're placing our focus on the games. More people than ever before will have the opportunity to play Xbox One games and the team will be welcoming them with open arms,"

Among the games that will be available for Gamescom attendees to explore include some of the biggest games coming to the Xbox One, as well as some lesser known titles that gamers may not be familiar with. Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Project Spark, Killer Instinct, and Zoo Tycoon are all games that Microsoft will have available at the event.

It appears as though Microsoft is looking to make quite the impression at Gamescom, and it is hard not to wonder what Sony might do to try and counter Microsoft's presence at the event. Sony will also be addressing the crowd at Gamescom, and may reveal the release date of the PlayStation 4 at the event. Of course, the company may wait until the Tokyo Game Show in September to discuss that information, as they will be fulfilling a similar role as Microsoft is for Gamescom by delivering a keynote address at the Tokyo expo.

Gamescom begins next week, and gamers should be on the lookout for more news about the major event, including what other developers and publishers will be at the event, right here.
