Microsoft is preparing to launch the Xbox One in November, but have yet to announce what day in the month that the console will be released. Well now Microsoft may have set up a date to reveal the big Xbox One launch date, as they have announced to IGN that they will have a presentation during Gamescom in Cologne, Germany on August 20, before the event opens up fully the next day. The event will be hosted by Microsoft bigwigs Phil Spencer and Phil Harrison.
Microsoft has stated that their intention at the event is to give Gamescom attendees "the opportunity to get hands-on with a range of Xbox One titles, speak with developers and be the first to hear our Gamescom news."
The company also plans to reveal more details about their recent announcement of allowing indie developers to self-publish on the Xbox One at the expo. Microsoft has confirmed that they will discuss more details about the program and the timetable for how indie developers will be able to self-publish.
But what many gamers are hoping to hear from Microsoft is news about the actual release date for the Xbox One, as neither Microsoft's console nor the PlayStation 4 have a release date set. Gamescom may be the best time to reveal the information, as it gives fans several months to get ready for the system and Microsoft time to hype up the console for several months before launch.
Another important aspect of the Gamescom presentation is that Microsoft may reveal new exclusive titles for the Xbox One. Microsoft has previously promised that the Xbox One will have 15 exclusive titles for the console within the first year of the Xbox One's life, but so far they have not revealed all the titles yet. Perhaps we will see some new exclusives at Gamescom, or new footage of console exclusives such as Titanfall and Dead Rising 3.
Gamescom will take place on August 21-25. Microsoft has previously skipped the event last year, but appears to be storming back into Cologne with a serious agenda on their hands. Sony will also be attending the event, and could potentially reveal the release date for the PlayStation 4, or at least narrow down a release window for the console, which currently has a release date of sometime in 2013. Nintendo will also be at Gamescom as well.
Keep it here as Gamescom gets closer and we find out more developers and publishers will be attending the event.
