Nokia is "Pushing the Boundaries of Digital Imaging" with the Lumia 1020, according to the Finnish-based company's whitepaper on the Windows Phone 8 device.
"The Nokia Lumia 1020 re-invents zoom by combining a very large sensor with OIS for the first time," introduces Nokia about the smartphone. "Also it pushes the boundaries of smartphone creative photography with a new intuitive touch UI that provides manual controls for shutter speed and other controls."

The whitepaper by Nokia elaborated on the Lumia 1020's background, stating how the Nokia 808 PureView and Lumia 920 served as benchmarks for the company's camera phone technology. With the Lumia 920's low-light imaging and Nokia 808 PureView's digital imaging, Nokia noted it aided as a starting point for the "ultimate next generation imaging smartphone."
One of the biggest selling points for the Lumia 1020 is the 41-megapixel rear-facing camera. According to Nokia, the Windows Phone 8 smartphone introduces the second-generation of the optical image stabilization (OIS), following the Lumia 920. The Lumia 1020 also features the latest xenon flash and video-light LED not previously installed in any Nokia phone.
With collaboration from Carl Zeiss, Nokia added one more lens to the Lumia 1020, on top of the five seen in the Nokia 808 PureView. The first of the six lenses is made of high-precision glass while the remaining five is "moulded high-performance plastic."
"The lenses are physically very big for a smartphone, and the optical assembly alone is unique. But that is not all. We put the whole system inside a completely new kind of optical image stabilisation system, which uses an extremely high accuracy sensing system linked to very small motors which actively move the lens," Nokia noted.
The 41-megapixel camera isn't exactly 100 percent true. The Lumia 1020, in fact, can take 34-megapixel images under 16:9 aspect ratio and 38 megapixels in 4:3 aspect ratio. The device can also capture 5-megapixel images.
Nokia claimed, "5MP is the sweet spot for image quality that is easy to share and printable up to A3 size. And because our 5MP images condense the information from the 41MP sensor, they have amazingly high image quality."
The Lumia 1020's features include a 4.5-inch screen with 1,280x768 pixels covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The new Windows Phone 8 device has 32GB of internal storage for 2GB of RAM. A front-facing camera is installed featuring 1.2 megapixels. The Lumia 1020's camera also packs a 2,000mAh battery.
