Grand Theft Auto 5 is now a little less than two months away, and now fans can now begin their anticpation in earnest as Rockstar begins to prepare its release. With the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, the life of the two consoles is effectively closed; GTA 5 will be the last truly massively popular game to come exclusively to the systems before the next-gen systems begin to roll out. In honor of that, we give an extensive preview of the game.
The game will feature three unique protagonists that players can switch between at any time. Michael is a wealthy man who must deal with a bratty family and a wish to get back into the bank robbing game. Franklin is more of a street smart thief that runs in the more shady parts of Los Santos. And finally, Trevor is a crazed outsider who deals with the more unpleasant aspects of the life of crime. Much of the plot is still under wraps, so it remains to be seen how well the three characters will get along, and what common goals, if any, they are striving for.
Los Santos promises to be the biggest environment created by Rockstar, and screenshots from the game indicate that players will have plenty of cityscapes, coastlines, mountains, and badlands to explore with various cars, boats, and planes. The open world is so amazing that Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, claimed that trailers for Grand Theft Auto 5 made him depressed about his own upcoming game.
The gameplay trailers for the game have shown that the main missions will be bank robberies, and will allow the player to experience the heists from multiple angles. When not undertaking these main missions, players can switch to the different characters and see what they are up to and partake in their own private missions.
From a technical standpoint, Grand Theft Auto 5 is quite massive, and requires mandatory hard drive installs for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This will allow the game to not require players to have to deal with loading screens, even while switching characters.
Grand Theft Auto 5 will be the ultimate swan song for some gamers, and promises to be a strong contender for game of the year, or even possibly best game of the whole generation of consoles. Stay tuned as Sept. 17 comes barreling down upon us.
