Sony's popular Xperia Z smartphone is finally available for purchase on U.S. shores. Starting Wednesday, U.S. carrier T-Mobile began shipping out the Xperia Z to its customers.
The smartphone can also be found in brick-and-mortar T-Mobile stores for the upfront cost of $99.99. Buyers will then have to pay subsequent $20 monthly payments for two years, bringing the total cost to $579.99. As is the norm now with T-Mobile, this does not require a two-year phone service contract, and can be combined with T-Mobile's JUMP program, which allows customers to upgrade their phones twice a year.
T-Mobile offers the 16GB Xperia Z in black as well as in a special exclusive purple.
The Sony Xperia Z comes equipped with a 5-inch 1080p HD display that puts out 441 pixels per inch, a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor, and 2GB RAM. The cameras stand in at 13 megapixels for the rear shooter and 2 megapixels for the front-facing lens. The T-Mobile Xperia Z comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, although an Android 4.2.2 update is currently rolling out globally, and should land on T-Mobile's network in the coming months.
The phone's hardware make it a top-of-the line flagship, but it's the handset's unique hardiness that has attracted much of the attention it receives. The Xperia Z is built to be dustproof and waterproof, with the phone being submersible in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. You can't exactly go scuba diving with it, but the Xperia Z will be able to survive most dreadful water scenarios in which other smartphones will die.
