Everybody knew Google's popular 2012 budget tablet, the Nexus 7, would be getting a refresh this year, the only question was when. Luckily, the tablet's unveiling shouldn't be too far off, and Google should be revealing the 2nd-generation Nexus 7 at an event Wednesday, July 24.
Members of the press recently received a cryptic invitation for a "breakfast with Sundar Pichai" for July 24 at 9 a.m. PDT at DogPatch Studios in San Francisco. Pichai is the current chief head of Google's Android/Chrome division, and while no specifics were mentioned, it's pretty much a sure bet that Google will be showing off a new Nexus 7 tablet at the announcement.
Google is also expected to give the press the first look at Android 4.3, which will be a minor, incremental upgrade ahead of an overhauled Android 5.0 "Key Lime Pie" sometime this fall.
A flurry of leaks concerning the new Nexus 7 have also hit the technosphere, including alleged pictures of the tablet itself. A look at the sticker label (pictured above) reveals some of the device's specs.
If the sticker is to be believed (Google has confirmed nothing), then the next Nexus 7 will come with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera - something the original Nexus 7 completely lacked. The tablet looks like it will retain a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, and feature a 7-inch display with a 1920X1200 resolution. Underneath the hood will lie 4GB DDR3 RAM, and the tablet is rumored to house a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. The 3,950mAh battery is actually smaller than the original's 4,325mAh battery.
