In news that is sure to please fans of the hugely popular series, a new Angry Birds Star Wars game has been announced by Rovio, according to IGN. The latest entry into the popular series is heading to iOS devices Sept. 19 with a variety of new features and levels.
The game was teased on Twitter over the weekend, but the developer held out a few days to hype the next iteration of the exploding fowl-based puzzle game. While the first Angry Birds Star Wars game focused on the original "Star Wars" trilogy of movies for inspiration, this remake will allow users to play with characters and settings from the more recent prequel trilogy.
Available characters for the game will include the future Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker; the four-armed robot with the special ability to have respiratory issues despite having no respiratory system; General Grievous; and of course, the bane of many older fans' existence, Jar-Jar Binks. The game will offer around 30 playable characters for users to destroy the dastardly green pigs. In a unique twist, the developer is taking a page out of the Skylander and Disney Infinity playbook and allowing users who have bought Angry Birds Star Wars character action figures and toys to scan those characters in the game. Then the toys will be imported into the game and can be used throughout the game at will.
The game will also feature a new mode that will allow users to play as the pig enemies found in the game. However, it is unclear what this mode will be like. Will it merely be a skin swap that will switch the birds and pigs around? Will players be able to launch pigs into the air, each with a unique new ability not seen in the series so far? Will we see a completely new mode that becomes immensely popular in its own right, like the zombies mode in the Call of Duty series? Only time will tell.
Angry Birds Star Wars 2 promises to deliver more brand new levels of the same game that has driven millions of mobile users to waste thousands of hours trying to get the trajectory of otherwise flightless birds just right, so come Sept. 19, this game will be another colossal hit for both the developer and the Apple Store.
