Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 3 phablet is stirring up quite a storm in the technosphere, and while the rumored release date is still some ways away, here's what we know so far about the handset.
For starters, the Galaxy Note 3 should be unveiled around the IFA 2013 electronics trade show in Berlin that runs Sept. 6-11. Word has it that Samsung will be holding a Samsung Unpacked event Sept. 4 at which the Galaxy Note 3 will be revealed, but there has been no official comment from Samsung on the matter. The strategy, however, would fall right in line with what Samsung employed last year with the Galaxy Note 2, which was showcased at an Unpacked event just before IFA 2012 kicked off. Production of the smartphone is said to begin in August, with the actual phone landing in consumer hands over the next few months.
As far as what the phone will entail, it seems that Samsung will be releasing not one, not two, but possibly up to eight variants of the phone. Internally they should all share similar characteristics, although the processors and number of SIM slots could vary. Four of the variants are said to be specific for each of America's big four carriers: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is rumored to come with a 5.7-inch or 5.9-inch 1080p display, 3GB RAM, and either an Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. Initial speculation held the rear-facing camera at 13 megapixels, although a new report states Samsung might be experimenting with an 8-megapixel camera module to make the phablet thinner. The smartphone should also ship with the latest version of Android and Samsung's electronic S Pen stylus at the time.
